Rabat Ville

Like Canberra, Morocco's official capital city, Rabat, is overshadowed by two metropolises, Casablanca and Marrakesh. It is an elegant, spacious city and quite a change from the frenetic, closed in world of other cities focused on their historic medinas.

These are photos of the "nouvelle ville" - long, spacious, palm lined boulevards, smart cafes, a graceful Art Deco train station, a beautiful faux Moorish post office and streets full of charming white hotels and street lamps.

Stepping out of the station I thought we were in Nice or Cannes or some ritzy, Spanish seaside town.

Ornate Belle Époque flourishes...
And the view from our hotel window over the central city park...

The Bou Regreg, the channel separating Rabat and its sister city, Sale, is nowadays connected by a modern tramway system (a little bit of Switzerland thrown into the mix).

The railway station with its Art Deco mix of modern and oriental elements...

The excitement generated by looking at its arrival/departure boards and upcoming destinations...
Beautiful Rabat Ville.
